In today’s modern world where access to computers and the internet is seen as vital to a person’s development many parents and guardians are now grappling with the question of buying mobile phones for their kids. One parent asked my guidance counselor friend about her concerns on buying her kid a cellphone. ‘I went out today to buy my phone and my 8-year old child said she wants one too’, the worried parent told my friend. Indeed, children of today have grew fond of technology. Hence why even kids as little as seven are sometimes seen using one. Despite all the hype (plus their kids’ insistent bawling), parents should carefully consider the following advantages and disadvantages before rushing off to purchase a mobile phone unit for their child.
Communication—Worried about your kid coming in late or violating curfew? Having a cellphone can help you track your child’s comings and goings with ease. There are even phones equipped with the latest GPS features that can help you pinpoint your kid’s exact location. However, remember that easier communication is a double-edged sword—having his own phone can also help you rebellious teen sneak out with his friends more easily.
Learning Opportunities—Many mobile phones nowadays come with a horde of useful applications and programs that can help them in their schoolwork. Calculators, converters, e-book readers and word and vocabulary games are just some of the tech tools that your child can find useful. Yet, a phone can also trigger your child’s addiction to e-games which may have adverse effects on his grades. The widespread use of SMS in writing can also cause problems in your child’s writing and spelling skills.
Etiquette—A phone will open up your child to a whole new world of interaction that can prove beneficial to his psycho-social development. Keep in mind though that the phone will also pave the way for susceptible individuals to contact and possibly harm your child in some way.
In the end, the decision to get a mobile phone for your kid will fall entirely upon your relationship with him or her, plus all of your personal needs and preferences.
